The Chartered Quality Institute has a remarkable history rooted in the aftermath of the First World War. Founded on 13 January 1919 as the Technical Inspection Association — with just 500 founding members — it was established with an urgent purpose: to prevent the production of faulty munitions and uphold standards across British industry. The institute was originally headquartered in London, and over the following century it evolved through several names, becoming the Institute of Quality Assurance in 1972 before receiving its Royal Charter and adopting its current name, the Chartered Quality Institute. Today, together with its subsidiary the International Register of Certificated Auditors (IRCA), the CQI represents approximately 19,000 members across the globe, championing quality management in private, public, and not-for-profit sectors alike.
