A Institution With a Remarkable History

The Chartered Institute of Housing’s roots stretch back to the pioneering social reform work of Octavia Hill, the Victorian philanthropist and educationalist who, from the 1860s onwards, dedicated her life to improving housing conditions for the poor. Inspired by her legacy, the Association of Women Housing Workers was founded in 1916, later becoming the Society of Housing Managers. This merged in 1965 with the Institute of Housing — itself established in 1931 by local government officers in the West Midlands — to form the Institute of Housing Managers. Following the granting of a Royal Charter on 25 June 1984, the organisation officially became the Chartered Institute of Housing in 1994. Today, headquartered in Coventry, the CIH remains the leading professional body for housing professionals across the UK and beyond, reinvesting all income back into the sector as a registered charity.
