About the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport

The roots of CILT stretch back to 3 November 1919, when a group of senior transport professionals gathered at the Savoy Hotel in London, determined to raise standards in an industry that had been tested to its limits during the First World War. From that founding meeting, the Institute of Transport was born, and it was granted a Royal Charter in 1926. The organisation grew steadily in influence, and in 1971 was formally permitted to use the title “Chartered” — a distinction granted under the authority of Queen Elizabeth II. In 2004, following a merger with the Institute of Logistics, the body adopted its current name: the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport. Today, CILT represents over 33,000 members across the world, spanning logistics and freight, supply chain management, people mobility, transport planning, and sustainability.
