A History Worth Celebrating
The Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland was granted its Royal Charter by King George III on 11 February 1784, making it one of the oldest and most respected surgical institutions in the world. Its iconic home at 123 St Stephen’s Green in Dublin has stood since 1810, when the foundation stone — laid on St Patrick’s Day 1806 — gave rise to one of the city’s most recognisable Georgian facades. The College’s roots stretch even further back: the Barber-Surgeons’ Guild, the institutional forerunner to RCSI, was incorporated by royal decree of King Henry VI in 1446 — the first medical corporation in Britain or Ireland. During Easter Week 1916, the College building itself became a focal point of Irish history when it was occupied by insurgents under the command of Michael Mallin and Countess Markievicz, while RCSI surgeons simultaneously worked to treat the wounded — a testament to the institution’s enduring commitment to care, even in the most turbulent of times.
