About The Kennel Club

Founded on 4 April 1873 by Sewallis Evelyn Shirley MP and twelve other gentlemen, The Kennel Club is the oldest and most prestigious kennel club in the world. Its very first show, held at Crystal Palace in June 1873, attracted an entry of 975 dogs. The Kennel Club went on to acquire the world-famous Crufts dog show in 1939 — the largest dog show on the planet — and today recognises 223 pedigree dog breeds whilst licensing over 4,000 canine events every year across the United Kingdom. In recognition of its 150th anniversary in 2023, King Charles III granted the club the prestigious ‘Royal’ prefix. Its headquarters remains a private members’ club in the heart of Mayfair, London, housing a fine art collection and research library to rival any leading gallery.
