About the Queen’s Institute of Community Nursing

The Queen’s Institute of Community Nursing (QICN) is the oldest professional nursing organisation in the United Kingdom and is believed to be the oldest nursing charity in the world. Its origins date back to 1887, when Queen Victoria granted £70,000 from the Women’s Jubilee Fund to establish what was originally chartered in 1889 as Queen Victoria’s Jubilee Institute for Nurses. The charity was instrumental in developing organised district nursing across the country – a model that was copied internationally — and has been one of the pillars of the National Health Service since its inception in 1948. The concept of district nursing itself was pioneered in Liverpool in 1859, when philanthropist William Rathbone, working alongside Florence Nightingale, helped create a nursing school to train nurses across 18 districts of the city. The charity adopted its current name, the Queen’s Institute of Community Nursing, in 2025 following a new supplemental Royal Charter granted in 2024.
