Its Greenwich Campus is situated within the Maritime Greenwich UNESCO World Heritage Site, centred on the magnificent Old Royal Naval College – designed by Sir Christopher Wren and built between 1696 and 1712. Described by UNESCO as the “finest and most dramatically sited architectural and landscape ensemble in the British Isles,” the site has a history stretching back to the Tudor royal palace where Henry VIII, Mary I, and Elizabeth I were born. The body of Lord Nelson lay in state in the Painted Hall in 1806 before his burial at St Paul’s Cathedral. The university itself traces its origins to 1890, when Woolwich Polytechnic – the second-oldest polytechnic in the United Kingdom – was founded with a mission to provide education to the working community of Woolwich. It gained full university status in 1992 and has consistently ranked in the top five London universities since 2010.
