A University With a Remarkable Story

Huddersfield has one of the most extraordinary origin stories in British higher education. The institution traces its roots to 1841, when five young warehouse workers — teenagers aged just 14 to 18 – founded the Young Men’s Mental Improvement Society, driven by a desire to better themselves. From those humble beginnings in a temperance hotel on Cross Church Street, the institution grew through a Mechanics’ Institution, a Technical College, and a Polytechnic, before achieving full university status in 1992. Today, it is recognised as a world-class teaching institution: in 2017, it became the first university in the world to win the Global Teaching Excellence Award, and it holds joint first place in the country for National Teaching Fellowships. Its motto – Sic Vos Non Vobis, meaning “Thus not for you alone” – speaks to that same spirit of purpose and contribution that those five teenagers embodied nearly two centuries ago. Notable alumni include Lord David Blunkett, BBC Breakfast presenter Sally Nugent, and actor Rob James-Collier of Downton Abbey fame.
