About ABDO

The Association of British Dispensing Opticians was formed in 1986 following the merger of the Association of Dispensing Opticians and the Faculty of Dispensing Opticians, brought together by the Health and Social Security Act of 1984. However, the profession’s roots stretch back far further — the voluntary regulation of dispensing opticians began as early as 1926, and the profession was formally recognised as a statutory profession under the Opticians Act in 1958. ABDO today represents over 6,000 qualified dispensing opticians across the UK, with a further 700 members overseas and around 2,000 student members worldwide. Its college is based at Godmersham Park in the heart of the Kent countryside — a fittingly prestigious setting for one of Britain’s most longstanding professional bodies in healthcare.
