A Proud Institution
BCS, The Chartered Institute for IT, has been at the heart of British computing since its foundation in October 1957, when the London Computer Group merged with an association of scientists to form what was initially known as The British Computer Society Ltd. The organisation was granted its Royal Charter in 1984, with a mandate to promote the study and practice of computing for the benefit of the public. In 2009, the society rebranded as BCS, The Chartered Institute for IT, reflecting its evolution into the leading professional body for the IT sector. Today, BCS represents over 70,000 members across 150 countries, making it one of the most internationally respected technology institutes in the world. Its first President was the eminent computer scientist Sir Maurice Wilkes FRS, a pioneer of early computing and one of the architects of the stored-programme computer.
