The Chartered Institute of Taxation has its roots in a conversation that took place at a dinner in Leicester in late 1929, when two former tax inspectors — Cecil Newport and Ronald Staples, founder of Taxation magazine — first discussed forming a professional body for taxation. That vision became reality on 5 December 1930, when eight tax professionals met at Hutchins & Plowman, Chartered Accountants, at 11 Pancras Lane in the City of London, and formally established the Institute. After decades of growth and advocacy, the Institute was granted its Royal Charter on 29 April 1994, with the Lord Chancellor formally presenting it at Lincoln’s Inn Hall that December — a moment that confirmed the practice of taxation as a fully recognised, independent profession in the United Kingdom.
