The Institute was formally established in 1942 following the merger of the Hospital Officers Association with the Association of Clerks and Stewards of Mental Hospitals — a milestone year that also saw the publication of the landmark Beveridge Report, which laid the foundations for the modern NHS. Over the decades, the organisation evolved through several name changes — from the Institute of Health Service Administrators in 1970, to the Institute of Health Services Management in 1984, to the Institute of Healthcare Management in 1999 — before adopting its current title, the Institute of Health and Social Care Management, in 2021.
