About the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow
Founded on 29 November 1599 by a Royal Charter granted by King James VI of Scotland to surgeon Peter Lowe and physician Robert Hamilton, the RCPSG holds the distinction of being the UK’s first and only multi-disciplinary medical royal college. Peter Lowe, who trained in France and authored The Whole Course of Chirurgerie in 1597, established the College with the central aim of improving and regulating medical standards across Scotland. Originally known simply as the “Facultie,” the institution received Royal recognition in 1909 and achieved full collegiate status in 1962. Today, it is a global community of over 15,000 healthcare professionals, continuing a tradition of advancing patient care that spans more than four centuries. Glasgow itself — a city synonymous with innovation, industry, and intellectual tradition — provided the fitting backdrop for an institution that has shaped the face of medicine in the UK and beyond.
