The Society of Biology was founded in 2009, formed from the merger of the Biosciences Federation and the long-established Institute of Biology, which had itself been granted a Royal Charter in 1979. In May 2015, the society was granted permission to adopt the title of the Royal Society of Biology, cementing its position as the single unified voice for biology across academia, industry, education, and research in the United Kingdom.
