A University with a Remarkable History

Robert Gordon University’s roots stretch back to 1730, when Aberdeen merchant and philanthropist Robert Gordon founded Robert Gordon’s Hospital — a residential institution dedicated to the education of poor boys. From those philanthropic origins, the institution grew steadily, becoming a Technical College in 1910, an Institute of Technology in 1965, and finally gaining full university status in June 1992 under the Further and Higher Education Act. Today, RGU is one of two universities in the city of Aberdeen, situated on a striking campus on the banks of the River Dee at Garthdee. Its Aberdeen Business School building — a landmark glass and steel structure — was designed by Foster and Partners, the same architectural practice responsible for the Reichstag restoration in Berlin, 30 St Mary Axe (“The Gherkin”) in London, and Glasgow’s SEC Armadillo. The university has also built an impressive reputation for graduate employability, having been ranked 6th in the UK out of 151 universities for job prospects in a Higher Education Statistics Agency survey, with 96.5% of graduates in work or further study within six months of leaving.
