A University with a Remarkable History

Northampton has a uniquely rich academic heritage. In 1261, King Henry III granted Northampton a royal charter to establish a university, making it the third university in England, after Oxford and Cambridge, and the 22nd in Europe. The institution attracted scholars from both Oxford and Cambridge, and at its height it was said to rival Oxford itself. However, its story took a dramatic turn: in 1264, scholars sided with the barons against the king during the Siege of Northampton, and the following year Henry III dissolved the university entirely, issuing a Royal Decree banning the establishment of a university in Northampton – the only time in British history a university has been stripped of its status. That ancient decree remained in effect for over 700 years, until it was formally repealed in 2005, when the modern University of Northampton was officially established. The University opened its landmark Waterside Campus in 2018, a £330 million development that stands as a statement of confidence in Northampton’s academic future.
